Lithuania to upgrade its public warning system

The Fire and Rescue Department plans to upgrade Lithuania‘s Emergency Alert System, with new sirens set to be installed in the country's different municipalities over the upcoming two years.
The existing siren network will be expanded to increase the number of people it covers, Ernestas Trunovas of the FRD said, adding that that will also create a possibility to operate part of the alert system in a centralized manner.
"Under the project, we plan to acquire at least 197 sirens and they will be capable of warning at least 75 percent of people living in areas within the Belarusian nuclear power plant's impact zone of up to 100 km," he said, adding that modern alert systems will be installed in 17 municipalities by late 2023 or early 2024.
New sirens will be funded from EU funds and funds from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.
Preparation for a possible incident at the Belarus-based Astravyets nuclear power plant is one of the Lithuanian FRD's priorities.
Lithuania uses mobile messages, sirens, radio and TV to warn and inform people about an extreme situation.
